Antonio Tajani is the new elected president of the European Parliament, succeeding Martin Schulz. Tajani, former EU Commissioner, is an Italian member of the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP) group and former vice-president of the Parliament. He received 351 votes in the fourth and final round of voting, compared to 282 votes for Gianni Pittella, the other Italian (leader of the S&D group) running for President. His term in office will end in 2019, when the next elections for the European Parliament will be held. PRESIDENT TUSK AT THE EU PARLIAMENT

Council President Donald Tusk appeared before the Parliament on 18th January, to report on the European Council meeting of Mid December. After congratulating the new President and wishing all the Members “well for 2017”, he opened his speech stating that, without any doubts, 2017 will be an extraordinary year for Europe and the European Union.
